Tote bags and t-shirts with Pedro Mena’s original art for Bob Weir’s 2011 benefit in Mill Valley will be on sale at the closing reception for ARTSKOOL’D
Update: At the closing reception of the ARTSKOOL’D show, on Friday, September 28 from 5-7 p.m., there’s yet another way to support Rex and get cool art.
Participating artist Pedro Mena also created the artwork for “An Acoustic Evening With Bob Weir” at the Throckmorton Theater in Mill Valley. Tote bags and t-shirts featuring the artwork will be on sale at the closing reception, with proceeds once again benefiting Rex. Tote bags and t-shirts are $12 each, and posters are free to Rex supporters with purchase. (If you can’t make it to the event but want a tote or tee, contact Pedro.)
ARTSKOOL’D, a group show featuring four Independent School teaching artists from the SF bay area, opens August 18 at RGB Shop + Gallery in San Francisco. Stacey Goodman, Yara Herman, Pedro Mena, and Noah Sakamoto work in different media and address different themes, but what they share in common is a natural affinity for “improvisation, collaboration, and activism”—something the Rex Foundation’s founding members, the Grateful Dead, honed to a formula for others to follow.
Together, these colleagues have worked on a variety of projects in their respected schools and for the first time are sharing their own work beyond the classroom, together. From Art Therapy and Arboriculture to The History of Rock and Roll and New Media & Technology — Goodman, Herman, Mena, and Sakamoto add a dynamic practice to 21st Century Learning. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the art and thought of this diverse group of aesthetic education practitioners.
Proceeds from ARTSKOOL’D go to the Rex Foundation’s The World As It Could Be Human Rights Education Program. In addition, RGB owner Faithy Leong has pledged 10% of shop sales at the opening reception to Rex.

Artist Bios:
Stacey Goodman is an artist and teacher living and working in Oakland, California. He works in a variety of mediums, creating art that primarily deals with how images create memories, both collective and individual, real and imagined. He is the founder of youth art blog, pARTicipation | Art. Stacey received his M.F.A. from Calarts and has exhibited in his bathroom, bedroom and garage.
Yara Herman is a two and three-dimensional artist who has been teaching visual arts for the past 16 years, 11of those at the Katherine Delmar Burke School in San Francisco. Although she and her wife make their home in the Bay Area, having grown up in Israel and Brazil, she draws inspiration from her multi-cultural heritage. Yara completed her B.A. in Art and Sociology from U.C. Santa Cruz, where she developed her love of sculpture, especially bronze work. She also curated numerous exhibits at the Sesnon Gallery and the Santa Cruz Museum of Art. Yara received her teaching credential from S.F. State and she is currently pursuing her MFT in Art Therapy from Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, CA. Yara believes that the purpose of art is to express one’s self without judgment; she teaches her students to not just accept but to “Welcome Mistakes.”
Pedro Mena is a San Francisco based artist and teacher. His recent works on paper revolve around ongoing studies on roots, sound, and travel. Mena’s award-winning curriculum and students’ work has been showcased at the Fillmore in San Francisco and at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. While he ain’t no writer, Mena gets a kick out of contributing to new music blog, glasGOwest. He received a BFA from School of Visual Arts in New York and is currently listening to trumpet player and Jazz Messenger, Lee Morgan.
Noah Sakamoto was born and raised in Oakland, California. He attended the California College of Arts and Crafts, earning his BFA in 2007. Noah has exhibited in juried, group, and solo shows within California and New York. In 2009, he was awarded scholarship positions to the Penland School of
Crafts, and the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Noah currently teaches art at the Town School for Boys, works as a certified arborist, and continues to live in the beautiful Bay Area.
