On March 10, 2010, The World As It Could Be Program, as part of the Rex Foundation, dedicated the Tree Sculpture to be permanently house at Balboa High School. The Tree Sculpture had been commissioned as part of the 2007/08 original performance of The World As It Could Be-Where There’s A Will There’s A Way.
The Tree Sculpture was designed by Johh Mayne of John Mayne Designs, with the lighting of the tree designed by Allen Wilner. The Tree helped reflect the holding of the Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as people exerted their will to manifest the rights spelled out by the Articles.
As part of the Dedication celebration, Balboa students involved in The World As It Could Be Human Rights Education Program spoke about what learning about the UDHR, as well as experiencing the creative arts as part of this learning, meant to them. Their leaves containing their comments were added to the Tree. Adding to the spirit of the Tree Ceremony was having John Mayne present to enjoy seeing that his Tree Sculpture would continue to reflect the UDHR for years to come.
Here are excerpts of some of the student’s comments.
